Gross Motor Skills Development

Gross motor skills are the larger movements that use the whole body — running, jumping, climbing, balancing, throwing and catching. They are the foundation for joining in at the playground, in PE and in sport, and for sitting upright and attending in the classroom.

We help children who find these movements hard, who tire quickly, or who seem clumsy or hesitant, by building strength, balance, coordination and motor planning through activities they enjoy.

We can help with

  • Throwing / catching a ball
  • Maintaining balance in standing, walking, on one leg and hopping
  • Riding a bike
  • Co-ordinating movements of arms and legs
  • Planning and sequencing movements

How sessions work

Sessions are active and playful: obstacle courses, ball games, balance challenges and bike practice, graded so your child succeeds and then stretches a little further each time. Where it helps, we work at the park, in the school playground or in your backyard so the skills are practised where your child will use them.

Where we can work on this

  • Mobile Therapy Sessions

We offer mobile therapy sessions so that your child is able to work on developing skills required in the home, at school, preschool or while in the community.

  • Telehealth

Telehealth sessions are available for clients who aren’t able to attend regular face to face sessions and offer flexibility for families who have a busy schedule, are isolating or live remotely.

Gross Motor Skills Development: your questions

What is the difference between an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist for gross motor skills?

Both can help. Occupational therapists focus on how movement skills support participation in everyday activities such as play, school and self-care, and on the planning and coordination behind movement. If we think a physiotherapist should also be involved, we will tell you.

Can you help my child learn to ride a bike?

Yes — bike riding is one of the goals families most often bring to us. We break it into balance, pedalling and steering steps and practise in a safe space near you.
