Handwriting

Handwriting is one of the most common reasons school-aged children are referred to an occupational therapist. When writing is slow, messy, painful or tiring, children can fall behind in getting their ideas onto the page even when they know the answers.

We look at the whole picture — posture, pencil grasp, hand strength, visual motor skills, letter formation and speed — and work with your child, and where helpful their teacher, on the pieces that are getting in the way.

We can help with

  • Pencil grasp
  • Letter formation
  • Pencil pressure
  • Handwriting speed
  • Spatial orientation
  • Pain or fatigue

How sessions work

After a handwriting assessment we set specific goals, such as forming lowercase letters correctly or keeping up with copying from the board. Sessions combine the underlying skills (hand strength, visual motor integration, posture) with structured handwriting practice, and we share strategies with school so they are reinforced in class. Where handwriting is unlikely to become functional, we can also advise on typing and other alternatives.

Where we can work on this

  • Mobile Therapy Sessions

We offer mobile therapy sessions so that your child is able to work on developing skills required in the home, at school, preschool or while in the community.

  • Telehealth

Telehealth sessions are available for clients who aren’t able to attend regular face to face sessions and offer flexibility for families who have a busy schedule, are isolating or live remotely.

Handwriting: your questions

My child’s handwriting is messy but they are only in kindergarten. Is it too early?

The early school years are a good time to establish correct grasp and letter formation before habits set in. An assessment will tell you whether your child is on track or would benefit from support.

Can you work with my child’s school?

Yes. With your consent we can liaise with your child’s teacher, share strategies and, where helpful, run sessions at school.
